<image:title>Research - Quantitative, highly multiplexed nucleic acid detection</image:title>
<image:caption>Our goal is to quickly, cheaply, and easily quantify thousands of nucleic acid sequences in hundreds of samples simultaneously. To achieve this goal, we are building on our massively multiplexed nucleic acid detection technology CARMEN (e.g., mCARMEN, qCARMEN, bbCARMEN).</image:caption>

      <image:title>Research - Applying Cas13 to systematically study host-pathogen interactions</image:title>
<image:caption>Our lab applies Cas13 to experimentally study host-pathogen interactions, using viruses such as influenza and SARS-CoV-2 as model systems. Our goal is to take a systems biology approach by simultaneously measuring the dynamics of a core set of viral and host genes involved in infection using qCARMEN, while simultaneously altering infection conditions (such as multiplicity of infection, cell type, and viral or host genotype). We will perform experiments in cell culture, organoids, and ultimately in animal models.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Research Specialist I am from the Netherlands and before coming here, I have performed research at the Virology Department of the Leiden University Medical Center, where I focused on elucidating the role of a SARS-CoV-2 protease on host immune evasion. I am interested in all things virology and now especially the possibilities of using Cas13 as a tool to detect and target viral RNAs. Outside of the lab, I can be found cheering on Princeton's sports teams, reading historical novels, exploring new cities or hanging out with my friends. Contact: mg2406@princeton.edu</image:caption>

<image:caption>Lewis-Sigler Theory Scholar Ofer Kimchi is a Lewis-Sigler Theory Scholar. He received his PhD in Biophysics from Harvard University, advised by Michael Brenner. He is broadly interested in exploring the mechanisms by which structures arise in biology from molecular interactions. How does biology leverage its inherent out-of-equilibrium aspects to realize robust assemblies, and to what extent can we implement similar processes in laboratory settings? His research focuses especially on these questions in the context of RNA-RNA interactions, including their regulation by intramolecular secondary structure. Cas13 provides an ideal system in which to address these questions. In his free time, Ofer enjoys swimming, playing piano, and rereading Discworld for the umpteenth time. He received his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, where he was advised by Dr. Tim Yeh. His research focused on DNA-templated silver nanoclusters (DNA/AgNCs), and he developed a novel, non-FRET reporter using DNA/AgNCs for CRISPR/Cas diagnostics. This project fueled his interest in synthetic biology and CRISPR/Cas diagnostics, leading him to the Myhrvold lab. Before his time at UT Austin, he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Korea University in South Korea, where he worked on biosensor applications using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Outside the lab, Soonwoo enjoys running, watching various sports, and spending time with his wife and baby boy. Contact: swhong@princeton.edu</image:caption>

She received her Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry at Nankai University, advised by Deming Kong. Her Ph.D. research focused on designing functional DNA nanostructures for bioimaging and biosensing. She developed CRISPR/Cas12 sensors for detecting live-cell biomarkers and rapid point-of-care testing. As an exchange Ph.D. student, she studied in Jörg Enderlein’s lab at Georg-August University in Göttingen, Germany, where she utilized metal-induced energy transfer (MIET) technology to image cell membrane surface engineering and cell tension processes. Currently, Dongxia is interested in applying CRISPR/Cas13 imaging technology to study virus-host interactions. Outside the lab, she enjoys exploring new things and traveling.
